After injecting himself with a dose of magic mushrooms, a 30-year-old man was hospitalized because the fungi started to grow in his blood.

The case was made public by experts of the Creighton University School of Medicine with the man being referred to as Mr. X. The patient suffers from depression, bipolar disorder, and opioid dependency and the reason he took a shot of magic mushroom is to try to cure himself.

Mr. X made a mushroom tea concoction by boiling hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms and then filtered the blend through a cotton swab. He then injected himself with the ‘tea.’ Days after the injection, he was rushed to the hospital with the mushroom he injected growing in his blood.

The man was reportedly finding ways to treat his depression and opioid dependence. Then he came across research on the effect of small doses of hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms and LSD.

It’s true that taking a compound found in the magic mushrooms can reduce depression feelings but Mr. X has entirely misunderstood the research. Days after taking his mushroom tea, the man started to suffer from jaundice, nausea, hematemesis, and lethargy.

The injection has caused several other issues like hyponatremia, hypochloremia, acute renal insufficiency, thrombocytopenia, acute liver injury, and hypocalcemia.

He then experienced acute respiratory failure and septic shock driven by multiple-organ failure. Fungemia and bacteremia cultures were later found in his blood.

Mr. X has spent the last 22 days in the hospital with 8 days in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).
