Because of that, from the University of Maryland as well as the University of Zurich, a researching team has been working hard to deal with this issue. The team aimed for more nimble drones with equipment such as event cameras with special sensor type and more importantly, artificial intelligence.

As a matter of fact, the team has recently shown their research to the public. Their product appeared on arXiv, a pre-print server. And as “seeing is believing”, the team actually prepared a demo video for better illustration of their research. In the video, we can see a demo drone dodging obstacles like toys, hurled balls, and even a real drone.

The team of researchers provided some statistics for us to check out. Among all the objects, the drone managed to dodge around 70 to 86 percent of them all. The range for those objects varied from 17 feet to over 200 trials away, coming towards the drone. With such an impressive result, it’s highly possible for drones to adapt this ability and dodge similar moving objects in the real world.

For a long time, we have always want drones to share the sky with flying creatures and birds without risking the device or the animals. Not just that, in the future, there might be objects (or even subjects) that intended to harm drones. For example, drones to enforce the laws might encounter angry citizens who could hurl projectiles towards the drones.
