Diego Maradona, the Argentina soccer legend, has died at the age of 60 after a cardiac arrest, as confirmed by his lawyer Matias Morla.

The news was also confirmed by the Argentine Football Association on Wednesday through a short message posted on their social media accounts. A cardiac arrest results from electrical disturbances, causing the heart to stop beating suddenly. The association’s tweet reads:

“The Argentine Football Association, through its President Claudio Tapia, expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona. You will always be in our hearts.”

Maradona has always been considered one of the greatest soccer players in history and his name became very popular around the world after helping his country win the World Cup in 1986.

He got a lot of attention at the tournament by giving a memorable performance against England. During the match, he had an iconic goal that he described as the “Hand of God.”

Peter Shilton, the goak keeper at the time, jumped out forward and punched the ball into the goal. Though it was apparently handball, the goal was accepted as the referee didn’t see the foul.

Maradona then scored one of the best goals in soccer history during that same game after running past 7 English defenders. His career was also known for a lot of controversies as well as his notorious lifestyle that resulted in addiction and alcoholism.

President Alberto Fernandez of Argentina announced 3 days of national mourning for his passing along with a tribute to the superstar on Twitter.

“You took us to the top of the world. You made us feel incredibly happy. You were the greatest of all. Thank you for having existe.”

On Wednesday, Maradona’s fans in Argentina and Naples poured down the street across the country to pay tribute to one of the greatest soccer players of all time. Meanwhile, an autopsy has been authorized by his family to determine the cause of death.
