How many times have you bought something for this function but it turns out to be made for another use? What would you do then?
Many people will face this question when they buy an ice bucket or fruit basket that is actually a spittoon. Chinese merchants on Amazon are giving the receptacle of spit another life by rebranding it as a tool used on the dinner table. Commonly used for spitting, a spittoon is usually made of enamel. Deng Xiaoping, a former leader of China, often had one by his feet during his negotiation with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher regarding the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule.
These vessels were widely used in Chinese households during the 80s and 90s and popular wedding presents as a symbol of good wishes. They are now found in rural areas at homes that lack toilets. Sometimes, they are kept by the bed so elderly people and children can pee at night.
The spittoon is currently listed on Amazon with a classic design. On the pots, there is a painting of a couple of Mandarin ducks, which represent happiness in China.
In one listing on Amazon, the merchant advertises the potty as having a retro design, versatility, and non-toxic materials.
“The traditional Chinese basket has a strong flavor of the times, can be used as a unique gift for friends who like to collect old products. He will be surprised.”
In another listing, the spittoon is even called “your right-hand man in your home life” and “an elegant fist.”
The sellers also include photos of the spittoon holding bottles of champagne, fruits, and baguettes. Their prices are between $32 and $58, which is roughly 10 times the price of the same product sold on Taobao.
