Apple Watch Failed Fall Detection Made A Cameo Appearance On A TV Show

This fall detection sounds really helpful for Apple Watch users; however, in some cases, it can still misidentify the condition of the wearer.

Both the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5 come with the series of 3 functions to save a user’s life, including an ECG app capable of detecting and alerting users on heart diseases. From there, users can receive treatments in time to prevent any complications from occurring.

Besides the valuable ECG app, Apple Watch is also equipped with fall detection. If a user accidentally falls, the watch will sound and display a notification on the screen with two options. The first one is “I’m OK” and the second one is to call 911 (the emergency contact number). If after a specific period of time the user doesn’t do select any of these options, Apple Watch will automatically dial the emergency number and send the location data of where the user has fallen.

This function sounds really helpful for Apple Watch users; however, in some cases, it can still misidentify the condition of the wearer. Specifically, in a TV show called “The Late Show with James Corden,” aired on CBS, Apple Watch had a failed appearance after it couldn’t detect whether the wearer had fallen or sat down on a chair.

From the video, we can see that the watch mistook that the sudden sitting down motion of the wearer as a “falling” activating the fall detection and sounded an alarm as well as contacting the emergency number.

This is just a rare and somewhat humorous Apple Watch incident on television. However, undeniably, thanks to these features of Apple Watch, lives have been saved.

Apple Watch is also dominating the wearable market, accounting for 47.9% of the global market share, only in the third quarter. The total amount of watches sold in three months, from July to September reached 6.8 units, far exceeding the 1.9 million figure of Samsung. This clearly indicates the popularity of the Apple product on the smartwatch market.
