Having 30,000 Social Media Followers, You Will Be Celebrity In This Country

Would you love to officially become a celebrity in the United Kingdom?

The rise of social media has led to the massive growth of so-called celebrities, who boast a significant number of followers on their social networking site. Either they are celebrities or that's what they think about themselves, the United Kingdom authorities are about to have a serious opinion about this. Recently, the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has already released an announcement saying that you will be qualifiedly considered as an internet "celebrity" if your social media account (Instagram and Twitter mainly) has more than 30,000 followers, as per a report by Gizmodo.

The Telegraph said in a report that this decision came after a case involving a lifestyle blogger in the country and the pharmaceutical giant Sanofi. According to the report, the company had hired her to "endorse a sleeping sedative" on her Instagram account - which has about 32,000 followers at that time. After that, the blogger wrote in her "endorsement" post that she was "a night owl" and described the drug as a great method to get away from insomnia.

After the "advertisement" was triggered, the Advertising Standards Authority said that the UK law does not allow such endorsement behavior of celebrity. In response, the pharmaceutical giant argued that the blogger could not be a celebrity with 32,000 followers, so no rule was broken. The ASA once again replied that under the advertising laws of the country, the blogger was an internet celebrity because of such a massive number of followers as well as the significant attention of those people.

According to the Telegraph's report, other similar cases will be kept in check by the UK regulators. From now on, it sounds like that you will officially be a celebrity on the Internet if you own more than 30,000 followers in the UK.
