10,000 People Tune In Just To Watch A Young Woman Sleep For 5Hrs

Recently, a popular Taiwanese streamer has sparked controversy on social media after making about $3,000 just by streaming herself sleeping in five hours with thousands of fans tuning in to watch.

Wang Yimin is a former member of AMOi-AMOi, a Chinese-Malaysian girl group. After the group was disbanded, she joined Twitch late last year. And it didn’t take long before she became one of Taiwan’s most popular Twitch streamers. Most of the time, Yimin plays video games while chatting with her fan.

However, on February 24th, she tried something new. At around 5 pm, she logged into Twitch with her account. Instead of seeing her at her usual desk, fans saw her on her bed. She lied down and began sleeping until around 10 pm. In just five hours, she attracted tens of thousands of viewers with 11,200 concurrent viewers as a peak.

During her controversial stream, all Yiming did was put on her eye mask and sleep. But she managed to earn around $3,000 from donations and the advertising revenue thanks to the number of people watching.

When the streamer woke up from her sleep, she was shocked to see that her stream had thousands of people tuning in for about 5 hours. During that time, despite not doing anything, she was the top streamer in Taiwan.

While some of her fans loved the new streaming format, some social media users criticized Twitch for allowing such content.

Sleep streams have turned into somewhat of a trend, not only on Twitch but also other live streaming platforms. For the last two years, many streamers have tried on-stream sleeping. Some even allowed viewers to wake them up using donation notifications.
